Favorite Things, Crayons, Music and Sisters...

I've been having a blast with Darlene's {Studio4 Designworks} newest kit, Live for Weekends! I created this page for the July Layer It Up Challenge. The challenge was to use only two papers and as many elements as possible from a single kit. I used 40 of the 58 elements in Darlene's kit.

This kit has loads of possiblities. This page is dedicated to the Summer Music Showcase held at the School of Music where Emily and Mia take piano lessons. Their goal is to play a duet together at the 2012 Summer Showcase!

I made this page for the July Art Journal Challenge. We were challenged to make a page about something from our childhood that still brings us joy. I created this journal page with Art from the Heart, the July collaborative kit by the Digiridoo designers. Love it...I know I'll be using this kit over and over and over again!

Oh! One more recent page...I used a template from Double the Fun Vol. 2 created by the amazingly talented template designing queen, Anna {Scrap-a-holic Designs} for this double page layout. Anna is the Digiridoo Featured Designer this month! All the pretties on the layout are from Morning Bloom by Vicki {Dana's Footprint Designs} and Jewel {Mad Genius Designs}.

Independence Parade!

The girls decorated their scooters on Sunday afternoon in preparation for our Annual neighborhood Independence Day Parade. We lined up behind the fire truck at 9:00 AM and walked/rode around the neighborhood waving flags and chatting with neighbors. It was fun, but it was HOT! No surprise that the pool was packed after the parade!

They Were So Little!

I went back to 2006 for the photos to create these two layouts. Mia's birthday is right after Christmas and Emily's birthday is right after the new year, so it's difficult to plan big parties. Back in 2006, I had this idea to celebrate their half birthdays! We celebrated Emily's third and a half birthday and Mia's one and a half in July!! What crazy fun that was!!

Both layouts were created with Two-riffic, the June Collaborative kit by the Digiridoo Scraps Designers. It's FREE with a $5 purchase in the store through the end of June 2011!!

And, I came across this cute photo of Mia (also taken in 2006) the other day and knew that Darlene {Studio4 Designworks} had the perfect kit...A Woman's Work! I also used a template from Inspire You: Inspired by Charlie by Scrap-a-holic Designs.

Here are two pages I just finished using kits designed by the amazingly talented Feli of Feli Designs. I went back in the archives for these two photos...the first is of my niece Megan when she was a tiny tot 9 years ago (she's a teenager now!) and the second is Emily just a few days after we got her. Chuck took the photo of Emily while we were touring around China on a bus. She was sound asleep in my arms and it was pure bliss! It's one of my favorite first photos of her...and, just look at those eye lashes!

Guess this is the future of music! Pretty cool, but call me old fashioned, I prefer the real instruments!

Spend the Summer with Jesus

I can't think of a better way to spend my summer than strengthening my relationship with Jesus. Our church is doing things a little differently this summer and as a result, our Women's Bible Study will not be meeting for the summer. We could not imagine not studying the Word together for three whole months. So, the Women's Online Study was born!

We are studying and reflecting using Beth Moore's devotional book, Jesus: 90 Days with the One and Only independently, but also coming together online to discuss our journey.

Once again, I found a fantabulous website after clicking here and there and ending up here...

V and Co. Oh my goodness! I am in crafty love!

Check out this super cute fabric ring...Vanessa has directions to make it here and if you don't want to go out to purchase the pieces you need to make it, you can order a kit from her here.
I haven't made one yet, but I hope to have time (today, maybe) to run into the fabric store to see what I can find in the remnant basket.

Vanessa has a load of other tutorials on her site as well as a store of fabulous goodies!

Fantabulous Find Friday: Fast Delish Dinner

I am always on the lookout for fast, easy and yummy meals for my family. I came across this recipe for Buffalo Chicken Sandwhiches in the March issue of Real Simple and gave it a try...it is now a family favorite! You can easily adjust the spicy factor to your family's taste and you don't need as much butter as it calls for in the recipe.

Doesn't it look soooo delicious? It is!

After you grab this recipe, poke around the Real Simple recipe site for more awesome meals. I love that you can find fancy schmancy gourmet recipes (not that I ever make those) as well as quick and delicious meals for those nights when the kids have after school activities and dinner has to happen fast.

I created the Blink of an Eye layout for Digi Dare #223 and I also used a ruler from Making the Grade by Snippets Inc. and a watch from About Time by the Digiridoo Designers

Vicki (Dana's Footprint Designs) just came out with her newest kit, Bits of Yesterday and it's full of fabulous vintage goodies, but I really think that it can be used for current photos too. I need to find a bit of time to whip up another layout with this one!

I used photos that my mom had of a picnic at a neighbor's home during the summer of 1954. I just love that they brought the dining room table and chairs out to the lawn for the picnic! And, we think that a few folks are watching a softball game in the photo on the right. Last, but certainly not least, I created this layout for the Digiridoo April Color Challenge with Spring Cameo by Sarah Barber Design; some elements were recolored or modified to meet the challenge requirements; Font: MTF Cutie Patootie

Fantabulous Find Friday: ABC Scripture Challenge

You never know when you're going to click on a link in someone's siggie and find something fabulous. I did a random link click last week and found myself at Triple the Scraps blog and Patter's ABC Scripture Challenge. An ABC book of scripture...FANTABULOUS!

I've had this desire to do more Bible study on my own (no offense to Beth Moore and the many fabulous Bible teachers out there) and I've also been looking around at Faith Journals. Ohmygoodness! God has blessed me with this ABC Scripture Challenge at the exact right time!

In a nutshell, Patter gives a new word every other Sunday and then, participants study their Bible to find scripture that is meaningful to them based on the given word. You can find more details by clicking on the link above.

Although the challenge began in January, I plan to work on at least two words per week until I get caught up. You can find the previous study links here.

Here is what I've done for A, B and C...I get the feeling that I'm going to be caught up very soon!

Fantabulous Find Friday: Kari Jobe

Happy Friday! It's been quite some time since I brought y'all a fantabulous find, but I think you'll forgive me when you hear Kari Jobe. She is a local Texas girl and when she's not sharing her blessed gift elsewhere in the world, she is leading worship in Southlake, TX. She has an amazingly sweet, but powerful voice and she uses it beautifly to glorify God.

"This album [self-titled, Kari Jobe] is about hope and life; it’s about lifting the broken off the floor and singing love over them,” says Kari. “The songs create intimate moments and outward shouting, and it’s my hope that these songs find the broken and lift them to a place of praise to God for what he’s done.”

You would think that I went cold turkey on caffeine based on the lack of posts in the last month! I'm still here and still on caffeine...which I've needed to keep up with myself! Between planning a conference, new extra curricular activity schedules for the girls, traveling over Spring Break, field trips, volunteering, etc., etc., etc., I have been on the GO!

Today/yesterday is/was Australia Day! Since it's summer there most everyone I know is off to the beach or having a picnic...it's 31 degrees Fahrenheit here in Texas this morning...sigh...just have to remember that when it's 100 degrees here, it will be winter there.

To celebrate the Digiridoo Scraps designers have put together a fabulous blog train where you can pick up a load of gorgeous goodies.

Best Place to Recover...

Emily had her tonsils removed on December 20th (yes, I know...how horrible just 5 days before Christmas, but it had to be done). The surgery went well and she was a real trooper in the hospital. But, she determined that the best place to recover is at home in Mommy and Daddy's bed!

The remainder of her recovery went well even though everything she tried to eat tasted like salt and pepper to her, she couldn't eat Christmas cookies and she was very tired.

This layout was created with Grace, which is a collaborative kit designed by my friend, Vicki of Dana's Footprint Designs and me! Even though I've "retired" from designing for the time being, the kit is available in the Digiridoo Store. You've got to check it out...it's packed with 24 gorgeous papers, 64 elements and 2 alphas!

Waiting for a Visit with Santa...

Hattie spends a huge part of her day sitting at the front window to keep watch for people who walk on "her" sidewalk. She barks a warning and then, lays down again to keep watch.

During Christmas, I put a cramp in her routine. I put a Christmas tree smack dab in the middle of her window! She wedges her 55 pound self under the tree to keep watch knocking ornaments off frequently, but that's okay when I find this cuteness under my tree...

This layout was created with a gorgeous kit called Visit with Santa designed by Kristie of Snippets Inc. Just check out how lovely this kit is...
I also used Visit with Santa for this layout of the girls sipping hot chocolate...with loads of marshmallows, of course!

Who? He's the Frenchman who is often credited with being the inventor of photography in the 1820's. There are other accounts of camera “technology” dating back to the 4th century BC. Regardless of who gets credit and how many thousands of years that people have been capturing images on pewter plates, paper and now in pixels, long live the photograph!

I started thinking about the gift of photography as I was planning to host this month's Quote Challenge at Digiridoo Scraps because most of our layouts begin with a photo. I treasure early photographs of my mom and dad as well as those of relatives I never met. Unfortunately, I only have photographs...no story or emotions to attach to the photo. That is one of the reasons that I scrap (in addition to finding it enjoyable and addictive!). Not only am I capturing an image, I am able to capture the raw emotions present when the photo was taken. Sometimes I do this with words (journaling) and other times it can be accomplished with a simple title, photo placement and/or complementary elements. I set out to find what others have said about photography and I came across the following two quotes:

A New Year...

What a year 2010 has been...there have been many ups and several downs this year, but I've held onto God and he's carried me through the valleys and danced with me on the mountain top.

I really hope to get back to blogging more consistently this year...sharing photographs and layouts, preparing a few tutorials, giving you the scoop on fantabulous finds and whatever else I might come across to share with y'all.

I have A LOT of photographs that need scrapping, so I'm going to get started with a hodge podge of few recent layouts.

I love this photo of Emily and Mia that was taken the February after we got home with Mia, so she was almost 14 months old.

I went with the Kindergarten class to the Arboretum last month. There are just five girls in Mrs. L's class and I was the only "girl mom" to attend, so I ran around with all five very energetic little girls. We had a blast!

Our annual trip to the Pumpkin Patch...the girls enjoyed a crazy race through the Hay Bale Maze. And, we came home with six gorgeous pumpkins...they were plentiful and beautiful this year.

Yes, it's true. I'm closing my shop at Digiridoo Scraps. I love designing and digital scrapping, but the design process and everything that goes into it behind the scenes takes A LOT of time. I realized that I wasn't spending time on other more important things in my life. One of those things that I didn't have time for was scrapping...a bit ironic, wouldn't you say?! I asked the owners at DRS if I could stay on staff as a member of the Creative Team...and they said YES! Now I get to scrap for my family and promote the fantabulous DRS designers! My store will close November 14th and EVERYTHING is 50% off** until then!! We Made It!

After last year's Halloween That Wasn't, we were able to get back to our annual tradition of trick-or-treating in our neighborhood with the Martin family. And, this is the first year that Meisey joined us!

We (the parents) stopped outside for a minute to chat with our neighbors while the girls rushed inside. This is what we found when we came in...sitting at the kitchen table ready to eat some of their haul! Aren't they cute?! Notice the arrow pointing to the Kit Kat that M1 already opened, which she discretely closed again when us two mean mama's said, "We are not eating candy before bed." Hehehehe!

For the 2010 Scrappers Give Thanks project, participants will be challenged to create over 1000 messages of joy, laughter and inspiration for children in hospitals across the US and Canada. The details of exactly how you’ll do this will be secret until the launch on October 25.

Of course there will be loads of goodies from fabulous sponsors, but I believe that the real reward will come with the knowledge that a child in a hospital will smile when they open your handmade card.

In Loving Memory...

On September 7, 2010 my Daddy, the girls' Pop Pop, and my Mom's best friend and husband of 50 years entered the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior. We are heartbroken that he had to leave us, but thankful that God called him home soon after he started to suffer the painful effects of cancer. I am also thankful that God firmly nudged me to take the girls to see him and that my mom and I were at his side when he peacefully left this earth.

He was a quiet, but remarkable man who loved his family, his friends, fishing and reading. We will miss him so much, but we have many sweet memories to cherish until we meet again.

The end of summer break? The girls go back to school tomorrow...Emily is going into 2nd grade and my baby, Mia is going into Kindergarten!

I finally remembered to take my camera to the pool when our friend Grace came for our last swim date of the summer last week. It seems like just yesterday we were sitting on the side of the baby pool with these girls and now they're swimming all over the place like little fish...and seeing who can make the biggest splash.

I Just Had to Record This..

Mia and I have some of the best and often, very humorous conversations in the car. We were out running errands today and out of the blue she starts this conversation...

Mia: The next time I see Grammy I'm going to give her some of my money.

Me: Why do you think she needs some of your money?

Mia: Because she doesn't have very much.

Me: Why do you think that Grammy doesn't have very much money.

Mia: Because she spent it all buying things.

Me: Who did she buy things for with all her money?

Mia: You...when you were little.

Pause...while I am trying to contain my laughter.

Mia: Well actually, she still buys things.

Me: Who does she buy things for now?

Mia: Well, mostly Pop Pop and us.

I giggled the whole way home!

So there you have it Grammy...the next time you see Mia, you will receive some extra cash!

Fantabulous Find!

In addition to my family, coffee, scrapping and books, I adore magazines!

As I was zipping past the magazine rack in Walmart on my way to the back to school section yesterday, this magazine cover caught my eye.

I stopped short (my girls piled up behind me surprised by my quick deceleration) and grabbed it off the shelf. Flipping through the colorful pages, I noticed a few things...no advertisements for products that will make me skinnier or wrinkle-free, articles from several well-known Christian authors, Scripture from various Bible translations, and stunning photographs. Oh yes! I've got to check this out a bit more.

When my cram packed day finally wound down and I was able to curl up with my new magazine, I devoured articles from Max Lucado, Joyce Meyer, Dr. James Dobson and others plus inspirational stories about not-so-famous people (i.e. not in the pages of People or Us) who rely on faith to live their journey. There are also articles on crafts, food, health, travel, books and more! A truly inspiring publication in the sea of some-ol', same-ol'.

Life: Beautiful I hope that you'll check it out, be inspired on your journey and subscribe.*

We had an extra room in our cabin (more on the reason in a sec), so we invited our friends, Cathy, Guy and Lizzie to spend Saturday night with us. Cathy and I became friends while waiting for our referrals for Lizzie and Mia. We met in real life briefly in China, but we haven't seen each other in close to 5 years. We had a fabulous time and the girls played together like they see each other every week!

No matter how much you plan, sometimes God has another plan. My mom and dad were supposed to spend the week with us at the lake. However, my dad was diagnosed with cancer in May, started chemo in June and ended up in the hospital two days before we arrived in Pennsylvania. While we were all crushed that they couldn't join us, the hospital was the best place for him at that time. So, Chuck, the girls and I made the best of our time at the lake and talked with them on the phone often. He got out of the hospital in time for us to spend a day with him before we had to fly home. This photo of my dad (aka Pop Pop) and Mia just warms my heart! He is feeling much better, is getting stronger and has forgiven our poor attempts at fishing on the lake!

New Use for Tortillas

Emily lost her seventh tooth on Saturday. Nothing really remarkable about tooth number seven coming out except for the way that it came out. It was barely hanging on, but she wouldn't let Chuck pull it out.

After she finished chowing down on fajitas for dinner, she had a plain tortilla and it pulled her tooth out when she bit into it! I wish that I would have a picture of her face when she realized what happened! Here's a photo of Emily (a little fuzzy, but still adorable) and the tooth extracting tortilla!

Going Through Withdrawal Freebie!

Well...Hello Again!

I can't believe that I haven't posted in a month, but then again, I can! I had to take a short break and then, when I was on a roll again my computer picked up not one, not two, but THREE viruses. Yes, that was my shriek of horror that you heard three weeks ago! A very nice geek down at the local computer super store fixed everything, but then, there was the tedious task of getting everything back just the way I like it. So, I'm back online and working again...HOORAY!

However, just as I'm getting my mojo back, our server provider pulls the plug and our fantabulous Digiridoo owners have had to close our site for a week while they work their magic behind the scenes to get us up and running again. Have no fear! We expect to be back by May 2nd...just in time to celebrate Digiridoo Scrap's first birthday!! It's going to be an awesome bash with loads of fun and goodies galore!

I've been working on new products for my store, but I took some time today to scrap a few recent photos...

We celebrated Hattie's 10th birthday on April 2nd. She almost got the cake, but Chuck was quick (and I was quick with the camera too)! I created this layout with my kits Garden Gala and Leave a Legacy (I used the alpha as a clipping mask with one of the Garden Gala papers).
And, here's a sneak peek at my newest kit that will be released as soon as we're up and running again. It's called "All Natural" and is packed with 14 papers, 20 elements and an alpha. I used it here to scrap photos from Easter.

Career Day!

Mia's class has been studying careers and today the children were asked to dress for the career that they're planning...you know, twenty years from now! Mia has plans to be an artist...

The cutest artist ever! Other preschool friends plan careers as a vet, movie star, mommy, doctor, life guard, cow girl, police officer, ballerina and business woman.

There will be a layout, but I've run out of time today and I know that there are grandparents anxious to see this photo! I'm also working on a new kit full of springy goodness. It's been slow going since my mojo was zapped while I was sick.

Emily and Mia have HUGE imaginations and can make music with anything! Emily made a "flute" out of an empty paper towel roll and Mia turned the teapot from their Princess Tea Party set into a "horn". Quite often I am just astounded by their creativity and imagination...and I love it!

Yes, that is a Post-It note stuck to my iPhone, on which a nice little "To Do" app is loaded! I can't help myself. I'm an obsessive list maker! And, it's just not the same making a list on my iPhone. I need to feel the paper and my favorite mechanical pencil jotting what needs to be done.

Journaling: My 2010 word is faith. I will not allow my faith to be shaken this year. My faith begins with God and ends with God. I believe Him. He is my redeemer and my best friend. He listens to me and speaks to me when I am still enough to listen. He loves me! He will never judge me or let me down. He wants me to be happy and have the desires of my heart. I will not allow the world to shake my faith because I believe God.

So...it's been raining and cold and icy and raining and cold for what feels like the past six months (and now it's SNOWING today!) when I get an email from my friends at Famous F00twear with this picture:

Well, be still my shoe loving heart! Love the pink ones, the cream ones and the brown ones...aren't they ridiculously adorable?!

A few days pass, I'm still cold, I'm still wearing boots (did I mention the snow?) and I get this pretty little picture in my inbox. Are you kidding me?

Love the wedgies, but these...OH. MY. GOODNESS. Seriously! I have no idea where I would wear shoes like these, but I adore them!

BTW, I really can't complain about our two inches of snow when my friends in the northeastern United States have feet of snow! Praying that y'all are staying safe and warm!

Emily Does Hybrid!

For those of you who are new to digital scrapbooking lingo, hybrid scrapbooking is combining traditional and digital tools and techniques in a single project. Emily had this shoe box that she wanted to use to make a mailbox for her Valentine cards at school. She asked if I had some paper and ribbons. Well, I had something better...

Mia's class has been practicing for their Christmas program since October and their practice paid off. They did a fabulous job singing "Angels We Have Heard on High", which is a pretty ambitious song for 5 year olds!

The girls were really anxious to make gingerbread man cookies when Grammy arrived. So, I went out and got a gingerbread man cookie cutter and we whipped up a batch of gingerbread cookies. Unfortunately, it wasn't the right type of dough for cut out cookies. So...Gingerbread Man Cookies Gone (very) Wrong!

Wednesday was Mia's Marvelous Me day at preschool. As part of the assignment, she had to create a two-page layout about herself (yes, in preschool!). I joined her class in the afternoon to help with her presentation, read her favorite book, "Pigs in Hiding" and then, we shared her favorite treat with her classmates. It was a really fun 20 minutes, but I have a new appreciation for her teachers! Whew!

All about Mia...
I was born in Hengdong, China on December 27. My family adopted me on November 9, 2005. That's when we celebrate my Family Day! I have one sister named Emily and a dog named Hattie. I do gymnastics and I am going to learn piano when I start Kindergarten.

How many of you can do a split like that? Yikes! I can't and haven't ever been able to!

Five hours of tailgating, gorgeous weather, fun with great friends, distribution of two bandaids (one for Mia and one for Dad), one trip with the girls to the porta-potty (EEEWWW!), very little whining, loads of junk food (a highlight for the girls), Frogs for the Cure event supporting Susan G. Komen, record breaking attendance (50,307), and a HUGE WIN FOR THE TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY HORNED FROGS!

4 Years with Mia!

Whew! I can't believe that it's Friday already. It has been a crazy busy week, but the highlight was celebrating Mia's 4th Family Day on Monday. We had her choice for dinner, watched the movie that I made about about our journey to Mia and then, we gave her one of the gifts that we purchased while in China. It was a wonderful celebration for our family!

Sick Day

We have more photos of Mia sleeping in odd places and in odd positions. She is usually non-stop, but when she crashes, she goes down wherever she is at the moment! She got sick yesterday morning and was not herself all day. After lunch, I found her sleeping like this in the game room. I let her sleep like this for about an hour because I knew if I tried to move her, she would wake up and not go back to sleep. She really needed to rest, so I let her alone.

I created this layout using Sarah Barber's kit called Pink Hope. Sarah is donating all proceeds from the sale of this kit to her local Cancer Resource Center.

Layer It Up

I just finished this month's Layer It Up Challenge hosted by Bree (who is ridiculously talented in many ways) and I am actually quite proud of myself! I am a pretty minimalist scrapper, so I started to hyperventilate a bit when I read that we would be using at least 38 elements for this challenge. But I took the challenge and I'm so glad that I did! It's a fabulous way to try a new way of scrapping with a little guidance. Love it!

Where did the month of September go? We're hoping that since the calendar will soon flip to October that we will continue to enjoy fall like weather here in Texas. After a weekend with temperatures in the 90s, we're enjoying lovely cool weather this week. And, by cool I mean that it's about 60 this morning and will reach the mid-80s this afternoon!

We're gearing up for more fun in October at Digiridoo Scraps! I'm hosting the Journaling Challenge in October, which is kind of funny since I'm not a big journaler. After thinking about this challenge, I do realize that I need to focus a bit more on journaling memories for the girls. I've got some more thoughts on that coming soon. ;-)

And, we have our monthly Progressive Blog Challenge that will start on Friday, October 2nd. This month's collaborative kit is called Forest Fantasy and it is beyond fantabulous! Be sure to come back on Friday to join the train and gather all the goodies from us at Digiridoo Scraps.

The journaling reads...This is going to be one of those things that we laugh about when you’re a teenager. When I picked you up at school today, I noticed a significantly shorter section of bangs. After a most painful process of trying to pull the information out of you, it seems that you had finished cutting what you needed to in class. While you were waiting for your friends to finish, you took the scissors to your bangs and did a quick snip. Seriously, Emily! I love you!

I do love my girl, but she really perplexed with this especially after the bead in the ear incident that required an emergency trip to the doctor last week (I didn't even blog about that one because I was dumbfounded...maybe I should since that will be another story that we'll laugh over). The photo doesn't really capture the missing chunk, but she was really mad that I was taking photos, so I had to make due with this one! Thankfully, the missing chuck is underneath, so if her bangs are brushed straight down, it's not as noticeable.

Seriously!

On a serious note, I do wonder if she's bored in school and is doing these things out of boredom. You know this mama will be keeping an eye on that...

All By Myself

Well, the day has finally arrived...I sent my youngest babe off to school today. The past two weeks have been tough since Emily went back to on August 24th, but Mia has finally arrived at her first day of school! She was excited this morning and kept asking if it was time to go yet...that 30 minutes between taking Emily to school and having to leave for Mia's school is a mighty long time for a little girl. However, her nerves may have started to get to her on the ride to school. She was very quiet in the car and for those of you who know Mia in real life, she is rarely very quiet...especially in the car!

I can hardly wait to pick her up! It was a little strange for me today not having my sidekick, but I'm sure that I'll get used to being on my own for 5 hours three days a week!

Feeling Productive

Doing a happy dance over here! I actually knocked out three new layouts today using my soon to be released kit...and I even squeezed in ironing and the last load of laundry! Look out...I'm feeling sassy...and, I had only one cup of coffee today.

I'm not loving how Matthew's face looks so washed out in this photo...might need to play around with that a little more, but I do love how the photo looks tucked behind the fence. Emily and Mia just adore their cousin Matthew!

A few months ago, I met this really nice mom who's daughter was in Mia's gymnastics class. After chatting for several months, we discoverd that we attend the same church and she almost bought the house behind us! During several of those hours sitting on the hard benches at the gym we talked about her business idea.
